September 12th, 2008 by Jerry Kott

The Toronto Philharmonia will dedicate its opening concert on Thursday, September 18, 2008 to the memory of Thomas Bata, renowned internationally known businessman who died in Toronto on September 1, 2008.

The concert, entitled My Country, will feature the music of Bedrich Smetana, and will offer a set of six symphonic poems composed between 1874 and 1879 by the Czech composer. These works paint a picture of the Czech countryside, inspired by history and legend and will honour the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the Czech uprising.

This will be most fitting tribute to Thomas Bata who was born in Praha, Czechoslovakia on September 14, 1914. When he returned from Canada to his homeland in 1989 he was met with cheering crowds.
The concert will be held at the George Weston Recital Hall, Toronto Centre for the Arts under the direction of Music Director, Kerry Stratton, at 8:00 p.m.
